Huawei devices with MediaTek system-on-chips are known to be really different from other devices. Notable differences I can say are:

  • Lock states: Normally, a MediaTek device should use the lock state stored in seccfg, or if the ODM enabled it, the one stored in RPMB. But Huawei devices store it pretty differently.

"Huawei devices have two internal lock states:

FBLOCK: A special Research & Development unlock that disables all security restrictions imposed by the bootloader unlock policy. It allows writing to any partition and enables special fastboot commands.

USRLOCK: The standard unlock code state, which only permits flashing Android system images via fastboot."[1]

  • Their kernel sources are heavily modified.

There is a BFM driver that nobody knows what does it do, literal analytics code shoved in the kernel (Huawei Device Usage Big-data Analytics Initiative Support), Huawei kernel harden, a lot of useless driver settings etc. Look it up yourself, it feels like a maze.

  • Doesn't follow a normal partitioning scheme.

There is boot and ramdisk partitions on the device. Other parts of an AOSP boot image except ramdisk goes to boot while the ramdisk alone goes to ramdisk partition.
